Clare Beattie and Tim Williamson, ran a 2 day workshop in Almaty, Kazakhstan in April 2025 on the implementation of a Low Emission Zone in the city. Many key issues were discussed at the two-day event, including the need for extensive, timely and meaningful engagement with businesses, community groups and the public, a clear governance structure with effective project management with a mandate from political leaders, a collaborative and transparent approach to data sharing, evidence from an impact assessment to support decision making and stakeholder engagement, and the need to understand real world emissions within local circumstances. The importance of collaboration at the local scale, using wider case studies of LEZ implementation while taking on board specific local issues, was the overarching message of the two days, and one which could be transferred to other major cities in the region.
Deliverables: 2 day workshop, with supporting material and Final Report outlining recommendations for the implementation of the Low Emission Zone in Almaty.
